Mission and Accomplishments

Volunteers continued to work hard to fulfill the Foundation’s mission statement in 2020. Our mission statement has remained stable in the years since it was first written, and it is what we use to measure our success in achieving our ultimate goal of reducing the negative impact of psychopathy on society.

Aftermath Mission
The Aftermath: Surviving Psychopathy Foundation is dedicated to educating the public regarding the nature of psychopathy and its cost to individuals and society. We seek to support the families and victims of those with psychopathy. We support research that aims to: prevent or minimize the development of psychopathic traits, reduce the impact of psychopathic traits, and understand and treat the aftermath of psychopathy. Our ultimate goal is to reduce the negative impact of psychopathy on the families and victims of psychopathic individuals.

Educating the Public
In 2020 Aftermath Foundation volunteers and psychopathy experts summarized a number of recent journal articles to help people understand the nature of psychopathy and some of the impacts individuals with psychopathy can have on others.

The studies we summarized had examined relationships between psychopathic traits and workplace behaviors (maladaptive as well as adaptive), associations between certain linguistic patterns used in Facebook communications, emails, and text messages and psychopathy, as well as relationships between the three Dark Triad personality traits (Narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy) and motives for using Tinder. See the Research Committee report for a complete listing of articles summarized.

Aftermath volunteers continued to translate material on the Foundation’s website into other languages so that article summaries and frequently asked questions among other things can be accessed by people around the world. Translations that were added to the website in 2020 were done in Spanish, Dutch and Polish. In 2020 the Aftermath website was visited by 20,173 people from around the world and of those people that visited, 19,090 came to the website for the first time. These visitors viewed 42,899 pages in total.

The top ten countries from which people visited the website were:

  1. Germany (4,300 people)

Supporting Victims and Families

The Foundation website features a survivors’ forum, which is maintained by Aftermath moderators to ensure people are safe on the website and that the content that is posted is helpful to others and consistent with forum rules. Using the forum is a great way to connect with other survivors and share your experiences. A link to the forum can be found on the website’s homepage. To use the forum, a username and password are the only things needed.

The Help Committee continued to assist people that contacted the Foundation for help. We try to answer any questions a survivor or victim may have to help them on their road to recovery. We also try to locate resources about psychopathy, including mental health professionals who understand psychopathy who can meet a person’s specific needs. In 2020, we received 39 requests for help.
