Joan was a vibrant young woman, living every day to the fullest, loving her job and her friends. ‘Joan is our sunshine,’ Hannah, her best friend, used to say. Joan was always there for others, ready to give a helping hand or offer a shoulder to cry on when one of her friends went through a heartbreak. Joan too longed for love, but superficial fleeting romances where not for her. She hoped for a deep loving partnership that lasts a lifetime. She thought that her dream came true when she met George, a writer working on his first novel. From the first day, George would not let an opportunity go by to show his adoration for Joan. He showered her with flowers, chocolates, romantic emails and texts filled with hearts. It did not take long before George moved in with Joan.
Joan could not believe her luck. George made her feel like the most cherished woman in the world. So when George confined in her that he suffered a temporary financial setback, she did not hesitate to reach deep into her savings to help him out. Money meant nothing in comparison with the love she was receiving. But then one day Joan came home earlier than expected, and there, in the bedroom she decorated with so much love, was George… with another woman. Joan was devastated.
George blamed it all on the stress caused by his financial situation. He showered Joan with gifts and affection. Joan trusted his promises of even deeper love, only to be betrayed again and again. In the coming months George berated her, blamed her for his lack of success, alienated her from her friends, and robbed her of the rest of her savings. Joan confided in her friends, but they could not believe that such a charming, wonderful man as George could behave so badly. Joan felt totally alone. She felt she could never trust anybody again. She lost her confidence and became a shadow of herself…
