Mission and Accomplishments

In 2024 seven new volunteers joined us at the Aftermath Foundation, helping with various tasks such as maintaining our website, supporting memberships, and developing fundraising ideas to fulfill the Foundation’s Mission. Our Mission statement, which has remained the same for many years, guides our efforts and is used to measure our success.

Foundation's Mission

The Aftermath: Surviving Psychopathy Foundation is dedicated to educating the public regarding the nature of psychopathy and its cost to individuals and society. We seek to support the families and victims of those with psychopathy. We support research that aims to: prevent or minimize the development of psychopathic traits, reduce the impact of psychopathic traits, and understand and treat the aftermath of psychopathy. Our goal is to reduce the negative impact of psychopathy on the families and victims of psychopathic individuals.

Educating the Public

This year the Foundation reached out to people around the world through our bimonthly newsletter and website (18,307 visitors). Volunteers summarized current research, asked experts in the field of psychopathy questions about their research, and added to a list of frequently asked questions.

Research on psychopathy: In 2024 Aftermath Foundation volunteers and psychopathy experts summarized two new journal articles about psychopathy and shared the answers of three psychopathy experts as part of the Ask the Expert feature. The committee also shared some posters from the 2024 Society for the Scientific Study of Psychopathy international conference, as well as created a new frequently asked question (FAQ), to help people understand the nature and impact of psychopathy.

The Foundation also continued to support research aimed at helping to reduce the harmful impact of psychopathy. In 2024, Ms. Silvana Kaouar won the Aftermath Foundation 2023 Graduate Student Award. Click here for a brief summary of her research study.

Support for Families and Victims

Forum: In 2024 the Foundation continued to host a survivors’ forum on the website, which is maintained by Aftermath moderators to ensure people are safe on the website. The forum is a great way for people who have been in abusive relationships with individuals with psychopathic traits to connect with other survivors and to be able to post content to help others. Helping Survivors Find Resources: Also, this year the Help Committee volunteers continued assisting people who contacted the Foundation for personal help. The committee tries to answer (or find answers to) questions survivors have about psychopathy, as well as about how to deal with psychopathic individuals, and how to get help to cope with or to recover from abusive relationships. In addition, now that we have begun to offer support groups, people have begun contacting the Help Committee to learn more about these groups. In 2024, we received 91 requests for help. Survivors Support Group: In addition, in 2024, the Support Group Committee volunteers held a second support group for survivors online. The group met for six weeks every other week. Support group participants have reported that these groups are very helpful to them, so the committee is planning additional support groups in the future.

Survivor’s tips: Survivors of relationships involving individuals with psychopathic traits recount their experiences and share tips they have used for recovery. In 2024, one survivor shared the story of how learning about research in psychopathy helped with their recovery.
