Help Support the Aftermath Foundation

The Aftermath: Surviving Psychopathy Foundation is one of the only organizations in the world that is dedicated to reducing the negative impact of people with psychopathic traits on others.  We share with you what has been learned about psychopathy, including the ways people with psychopathic traits hurt others and what can be done about it.

Scientists have learned a great deal about psychopathy in the past 50 years. This information can be helpful to people in traumatic relationships as well as people who are trying to recover from such relationships. We publish this information on our website. It is unfortunate that, in spite of what science has demonstrated, most people still do not understand much about people with psychopathy. We know it does not help that there is so much misinformation and continues to be widespread misuse of the term psychopath.

By spreading real information, we can help people be better prepared to protect themselves, and we can help people along as they recover from traumatic relationships. Although the nature of traumatic relationships with psychopathic individuals is still not widely understood, it is remarkable how much research has been conducted just since the Aftermath Foundation was formed.

  • We present summaries of important research in terms that people without professional training can understand.
  • We are in the process of designing online workshops to help professionals to cope more effectively with psychopathic individuals they may encounter in psychotherapy settings, in courtrooms, in churches and synagogues, and in the workplace.
  • We try to match people requesting therapists with therapists who have experience in assessing psychopathy and in working with victims and survivors.
  • We are now preparing to launch an online support group to help survivors.
  • Given the urgent need for more research addressing the mechanisms that make relationships with people with psychopathy so devastating, and what factors help people recover from abusive relationships, we have funded some of this important research and are continuing to inform researchers about the need for more research in this area.

In almost all cases, social and organizational policies are not designed to deal with people who do not play by the rules, and it will take time to change policies to help people defend themselves more effectively when they are targeted by those with psychopathic traits. And the first step is awareness.
Although we are doing what we can, we know we need to do more. This is a big job, and we are a small organization!
If you understand the impact of psychopathy, or if you are in a position to help, we encourage you to donate to the organization – to help us accomplish our goals.
