Survivor Syndrome
Is there any research on the psychological impact that individuals with psychopathy have on those around them? It seems like the effects are as strangely uniform as the tactics that psychopaths use to manipulate and harm others. It may be helpful in mitigating the harm they do and prevent re-traumatizing individuals through professional “gaslighting” that occurs when professionals discount the effects these relationships can have on people.

Hello SalvoSalzburg,
You asked a great question about the psychological impact that individuals with psychopathy have on those around them. Volunteers at Aftermath (Shannon Compton and the North American Research Committee) summarized a research article, "Toxic Relationships: The Experiences and Effects of Psychopathy in Romantic Relationships", which examined psychopathic traits in a participant's intimate partner, and PTSD and depressive symptoms experienced by the participant, among other things. The summary can be found by going to "Resources" at the top of the homepage, then scroll down to "Research" and then scroll down the page until you find the article. Or you could use the search window and type in Toxic Relationships to find it.
The Research Article summarized is:
Forth, A., Sezlik, S., Lee, S., Ritchie, M., Logan, J., & Ellingwood, E. (2022). Toxic Relationships: The experiences and effects of psychopathy in romantic relationships. International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology, 66(15), 1627-1658.
