In our triumphant return from Spring Break, we were joined once again by Dr. Paul Babiak, Industrial and Organizational Psychologist and author of the book, Snakes in Suits: When Psychopaths Go to Work, who discussed ways in which to deal with psychopathic individuals in the workplace.
During “Aftermath Radio Q & A” we read a listener’s email and talked about the upcoming Fishead movie (about psychopathy) and iPhone app. We also checked in with survivor Dori from Florida, who talked about her experiences being in a relationship with a psychopathic individual, and discussed why people can be attracted those with psychopathic traits.
Dr. Babiak stated that he is frequently asked the question, “How do I deal with a psychopath at work?” This could be a boss, a peer, or even someone you are supervising. Based on his experience helping people deal with this situation, he has proposedĀ a series of “Do’s and Dont’s”:
1. Don’t label someone a psychopath.
2. Don’t confront someone you think is a psychopath.
3. Always have witnesses, or never be alone with them.
4. Document everything.
5. Repair your reputation and relationships with coworkers as soon as you think there is a problem.
6. Learn all you can about company policies and their Code of Conduct.
7. Seek advice and help from outsiders.
8. Make a formal complaint, and don’t be labeled as a complainer.
9. Always have an “escape plan.”
10. Manage your reputation, and know thyself.
